Two New Kittiens? - MissViv - 11-01-2020

Hello,  I am new here but have been lurking for a while.

My DH and I have a 3-1/2 yr. old female Ragamuffin and are getting a new female Ragdoll Kitten (Cinnamon Bicolor) around Thanksgiving (she will be 14 wks. old).  Am I crazy to consider another kitten (a male) a seal point mink?  That will make 3 cats!!  We will be crazy cat people.  The other kitten will be 12 weeks (different breeder) when he is able to come home.  I have already made a deposit on the female but still deliberating on the male.

My DH and I are both retired and stay home mostly so we would be with the cats most of the time.

Thoughts?

I'd urge caution on the two new kittens as they are unaccepted variants of the breed and reputable breeders do not breed them. This is a thread where we've discussed this in the past:

Hi MissViV - I would also advise caution on the two new kittens for the same reason. One of the reasons I joined this forum was because there is so much misleading information out there. It really is worth reading previous discussions on this:

Just want to say that you cannot qualify as "Crazy Cat People" until you have 5 or more.

Hello and welcome to the forum MissViv, so glad you decided to stop lurking and join us. Smile

As to your question about having 2 kittens at the same time, having done this myself before I can highly recommend it.
My first Ragdoll, Cody, I got just one male kitten as I already had two rescue females who after slow introductions accepted him into the family which was really nice.

However, after 4 years I thought I'd get another male Ragdoll and got my boy Fosco aka Fozzy and after a month got his littermate sister Katy (the breeder was intending to keep her for himself) and they grew up together and it was such a joy to watch them play, sleep, eat, well do everything together.

Tragically I lost my Fozzy to FIP last November and my remaining rescue girl  I had in March of this year after a procedure, so I have decided the time was right to get another kitten now, but only one this time around.

Please do keep us posted, we would love to get to know you better and hear what you decide to do. Smile

RE: Two New Kittiens? - Ragstimes1 - 11-02-2020

I had more than two and would recommend that as well.  I got Rags when he was 12 weeks old and it was right before Christmas.  All I can say about that is that the tree got put away the day after Christmas and hasn't been out since.  Rags was a seal point and I lost him a few years ago to kidney problems.  He got fluids for 18 months and gave it the old try.  He just ran out of gas.  I got Max shortly after that and he was direct opposite of Rags.  He was a seal mitted.  He and Rags were very good buddies right up until the end.  I lost Max to cancer a few years ago and he was the class clown.  My next pick was a blue bicolor and Beau was just an angel.  We never really knew what happened with Beau but he got sick, went to the vet for fluids and a shot and died shortly after I got him home.  I have one boy left.  I got Jamie 5 years after the others and he is the most loving adorable boy I've ever seen.  He is diabetic and gave me quite the scare the other night.  A noise woke me up around 4 AM and he was having seizures.  I quickly looked up low blood sugar, figured that is what he had and gave him Karo and some wet food.  I got him into the vet first thing Saturday AM who said he thought Jamie's sugar had been a bit too well controlled.  He's just about back to normal and is off his insulin for a short time.  We'll test him later this week and see where his sugar is.  It's very hard to regulate cats and apparently they can go into remission with the diabetes.  He just loves it when I pick him up, roll him in a towel and he goes right off to sleep in my lap.

For many years I had the 4 cats and it truly wasn't any more work than one.  My cat prior to the boys was an only one and I'd never do that again.  I enjoyed having all 4 and they enjoyed each other so if you want a second one and can handle the finances with it, I say "Go for it".  All of my boys came from the same boy who has since retired.  Her foundation breeder is gone and if I could get more kitties from her, I'd do it in a heartbeat.  I know Jamie will stay as long as he can but I will get another cat after he is gone, might be the "senior for seniors".

I have read that post. I did decide not to get the boy Mink but the girl does seem to be from a reputable breeder (Ridgeview Ragdolls in Virginia) but she does have Minks and Sepia's.

The Cinnamon Bi-Color was born a traditional white and her father is a cinnamon bicolor and mother is a lilac lynx. So you think this is not a good choice? I will try to post a picture of her.

This is a tutorial as to how to post pictures here:

The unfortunate thing about a breeder who ignores the breed standard is that you don't know what other corners they are cutting if they're ignoring this important part of being a reputable breeder. I've heard many tragic outcomes from dealing with backyard breeders so it's not a matter of being elitist or any of the other things that they will say in order to peddle these unaccepted variants. It's a lot of money to spend for a fluffy cat that you could find at a shelter that's as unlikely to have the other Ragdoll characteristics as any alley cat.
For what it's worth if I were in your shoes I'd ask for my deposit back and look elsewhere for a good breeder.

Welcome and keep posting.

If you want these colors, then consider Ragamuffins again, where they are accepted in the breed.
