RE: Smile for the day - MUM_of_FLUFFY - 06-11-2020 (06-10-2020, 10:56 PM)admin Wrote: That made me smile. When I was diagnosed as a child I recall thinking that I better find a way to cope because I was pretty sure that my mother's cats wouldn't be the ones re-homed... just kidding, (mostly), they were my cats too and I loved them. I also use a neti-pot regularly and it's solved my problems for the most part. I used to work in a dog grooming salon in my twenties but I had to leave because the large volumes of fur the blow driers blew into the air was just too much for me to cope with. I struggled on valiantly but my manager took me aside and told me I really shouldn't be working there if I had such severe allergies. I was devastated to leave *sad sigh* because I really loved that job!!! Mostly my eyes are affected and I do get sinus headaches. I use anti-histamine tablets called Zyrtec here in Australia. The active ingredient is Cetirizine. I also use anti-histamine eye drops called Zaditen. The active ingredient is Ketotifen hydrogen fumarate and it's been a miracle for me. I also use natural tears to flush and clear the allergens out. But as they say: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. A program of regular grooming keeps problems to a minimum. Thoroughly and regularly vacuuming with a Hepa Filter vacuum (I use a Dyson) reduces the allergens in the environment. Washing bed linen regularly in hot water with an extra rinse significantly reduces the allergens on my bed. Reducing soft furnishings can help and my floors are all polished timber and tiles. A lot of people are allergic to the proteins in cat saliva. Wiping Fluff's coat with a damp face washer really helps in this regard. Not sure if this discussion should be somewhere else in the forum, but it's been a massive relief just to "come out of the closet" as someone who is allergic to cats. It's totally manageable and Fluff is definitely worth it!!! PS: The medications I've listed here should be discussed with a professional before use!!! They work for me, but may have side effects for someone else... RE: Smile for the day - JanH - 06-11-2020 Few cats like immersion. Put them on a towel in a sink so they feel secure footing and then pour warm water over them to wet and thoroughly rinse. For most, the more frequent the, bathing, the more they come to accept it. (The first rule, clip claws first. Second rule, remove matts before wetting the coat, which just tightens them into the coat.) RE: Smile for the day - MUM_of_FLUFFY - 06-12-2020 I made Fluffy into a meme RE: Smile for the day - Ragstimes1 - 06-12-2020 The only one who willingly let me do a "butt" bath was Jamie and that was in the past year. I turned the water on low and just ran it over his tail and backside. Had to dry him off when he was done but he never fussed. I guess he was glad to get cleaned up. It was the easiest way to do it. I wasn't sure if it would work but it did and was quite easy.
