Early spay/neuter in kittens - admin - 09-02-2019

It seems that backyard breeders make any number of excuses for not speutering their kittens before releasing them. This comprehensive article debunks those myths:

RE: Early spay/neuter in kittens - Smudge's Mom - 09-27-2019

When we got Smudge in 2002, early speuter was still a fairly new practice. Smudge's breeder's vet would not do it, so I got my 12 week old by leaving a speuter deposit and without his papers.

I immediately called our vet to set up a wellness exam and neutering. My vet, too, said that he didn't do the operation until about six months. I told him I would bring in the report I had read from Cornell and we could discuss it.

So the next day I brought my boy in and it turned out he was the first Ragdoll that Dr. Brown had treated. He took one look at my 3 1/2 pound twelve week old, flipped him over and said, "Well, if they are big enough to see, I guess they are big enough to snip" and set his neuter for the following morning.

I'm still catching up on all the discussions here...

I was very surprised that Fluffy's breeder sold Fluffy to me as an entire male in 2018.
But by that time I was so "invested" in Fluffy I was determined to have him. She sent me his pedigree papers after he was neutered, which I now know is the old fashioned way of doing it. But I didn't know that then...
At his first vet visit with me (for his third vaccination) I asked the vet to neuter him. They said his testes hadn't descended yet and they couldn't do it. I took him in every week until they confirmed his testes had descended. She said they're tiny, but they ARE there. Not for long because I had them snipped the next day Big Grin
The breeder had instructed me to get him neutered at 5-6 months in April-May and his testes got snipped on 18th April. So she was spot on about when they would descend. But my ignorant neighbour advised me not to get him neutered and "let him make kittens because he is handsome". Although I was personally glad Fluffy had minimally invasive surgery, I have come to the opinion that early spay/neuter in Ragdoll (and all kittens) is essential to protect them from backyard breeding practices.
Since Fluffy came into my life I've also become interested in beautifully bred "traditional" ragdolls and preserving these bloodlines. I'm here to learn so I always appreciate feedback...

A cat can have undescended testicles, but, unlike dogs, the normal condition is for them to be descended at birth.

Wow! I didn't know that!!! I really appreciate the information! I was briefly worried that he might have had feline cryptorchidism (or worse) but it all worked out ok in the end...

Really appreciate the feedback Jan!!! Honestly I did everything wrong when I got Fluffy and I've been very lucky that things turned out OK with him. I'm going to post more about that in a more appropriate section...

I had two dogs, male and female, speutered at 12 weeks old in 1989.  This was in Atlanta and I had never heard of doing it that young.  They informed me it had been done that young for years, so it's not a new procedure and in my opinion "breeders" not doing it are only avoiding it for money.  They like to charge the same price, send them home younger, and make up health reasons for not doing it.
