Shadow - HelenMac - 06-30-2020 Got woken up by the most horrible stench at 2am yesterday went in the bathroom to find orange pooh all over floor in front of litter robot poor Shadow didn't make it. He had then pulled the hand towel down of the rail to cover it up. I cleaned it up hour later he had gone in entance way. From then on Hourly but made it to litterrobot but was very uncomfortable I stayed up with him. Rang vet asked if could drop him in to be checked out as was going into hospital for surgery at 9.00 So dropped him off signed to give permission for him to have bloods and a thorough check over and to give treatment.. If over $500 were to ring my mum and discuss with her. Hubby picked me up at 5.00pm just as they rang to say Shadow could be picked up. Went in to get him and was not impressed. Nothing been done no blood test or anything was seen by a locum who said he was stressed hiding at back of cage back to the world hissing and growling. Umm yes probably in pain, and in a strange place dogs barking cats crying of course he's stressed. Gee are you a vet or a mouse. They even took hubby down to get him to put in carrier to come home as reckoned they couldn't do it..Hubby got to cage called Shadow he cried and immediatly came to the front of cage so picked him up gave him a cuddle and put in carrier to come home. Growled all way home. Was given a bag of Royal Cannin ALLERGENIC dry to feed solely for next 6 weeks and a speck sheet to read.. I rang this morning to talk to Gabe which turns out is on leave until the 14th hence the locum. Shadow hasn't lost any weight in fact has gained weight since we put him on the Royal Canin sensitive biscuits and wet food couple months ago. I think the biscuits make him feel very nauseas as he eats a couple then constantly licks his lips starts saliviring and walks off. Hasn't eaten properly in over 32 hours and feeling very sorry for himself keeps crying poor baby so have given him some of his sensitive food which he ate normal and he's finally settled down and lying in the sun next to me. I have made an appointment with Gabe on the 14th. RE: Shadow - MUM_of_FLUFFY - 06-30-2020 oh no! poor Shadow! and poor you! hope your baby gets better soon x RE: Shadow - NatsFan78 - 06-30-2020 I’m so sorry! I will be praying for you and your sweet boy. RE: Shadow - Smudge's Mom - 07-01-2020 I hope Shadow is doing better now. Is he a bug eater? Smudge used to make himself sick on occasion, munching down spiders and carpenter ants. And like with Shadow, the stench was awful. Is a locum a vet tech? RE: Shadow - JanH - 07-01-2020 YELLOW stool and diarrhea points toward a bacterial problem. Flagyl may be an appropriate med to try. (Orange points to blocked bile ducts.) To treat the diarrhea symptom, realizing you may lose it as a diagnostic factor, consider canned pumpkin (not pie filling) or other squash family sources of fiber at the rate of several tablespoons per day. Hope things are getting better. The usual GI upsets last about 48 hours. RE: Shadow - Ragstimes1 - 07-01-2020 I've used the pumpkin for diarrhea and Jamie loves it. I also sprinkle vetasyl (fiber) on his food. The vet wanted me to give that and I've found that spreading the dose out over the day works. Nothing worse than "rank" pooh. Sue RE: Shadow - admin - 07-01-2020 I echo the pumpkin. Both cats like it and it seems to clear up loose stools in a day or so. It also freezes well so I buy a big can and decant it into a few jars in the fridge and freezer. Smudge's Mom Gina posted once that they freeze well in perfect portions in an ice cube tray. You do have to stir it when it's thawed to get the consistency back. As for any of the hypoallergenic foods out there my two REALLY disliked them, (think hunger strike), and I've tried them all over the 8 years after Tiki's IBD diagnosis. Several of them he was sensitive to as well. Seems that his body can recognize any meat with feathers no matter how small they make it molecularly. This is what they've been on for many years and both like: https://www.hillspet.ca/en-ca/cat-food/pd-dd-feline-venison-and-green-pea-formula-dry It's not cheap but they do clean the factory between it and runs of other foods, hence the higher cost. Their coats are really lovely on it. Sorry to hear of Shadow's troubles. He sure does like to keep you on your toes doesn't he? RE: Shadow - HelenMac - 07-01-2020 Pleased to report Shadow is back to his normal happy self. I've made an appointment for him to see his own vet on the 14th. The locum is a fill in. He rang me yesterday was freaking me out saying if this keeps happening Shadow could end up with bowel cancer and die. He wasn't listening to me about what Gabe his own vet had been working thru with Shadow. It was bright orange poo JanH but I found out he had been given some Purina dental treats that came in the mail which he's never had before which were made from yellow corn and other stuff so wondering if that was what caused it. He hasn't had diarrhea in well over a year. It was just the vomiting which Gabe and I have worked out is due to gorging when starving hungry like when mum sleeps in as he does it before even walking away from his bowel then promptly wants more food. Shadow has never been good with dry would scoff the biscuits down with out chewing cause loves them so much then bring back so could never leave dry food out. Being just on wet was always hungry so would scoff the food down . But since being on the sensitive dry food and +7 wet food and sensitive he's put weight on and the vomiting has been only very occassionaly now as I've been able to leave the sensitive dry out for him to nibble on 24/7. I'm just going to have to do my best an wait to see Gabe main thing is Shadow is feeling better. Will record between now and then if any vomiting or diarrhea. RE: Shadow - JanH - 07-01-2020 Good news. I wonder if they sometimes decide we just need a fright. RE: Shadow - MUM_of_FLUFFY - 07-02-2020 very pleased Shadow is feeling better!!! |
