Cat Food Question? Need advice... - MUM_of_FLUFFY - 09-01-2021

Fluffy will be 4 years old in November (so fully grown) and I'm wondering if I should change his food to a urinary tract formula or an indoor formula?

He was fed Royal Canin Kitten (wet and dry) in his first year of life - then for the past 3 years Royal Canin Ragdoll (dry) and Royal Canin Instinctive (wet). He also has a PetKit fountain (which he loves) and drinks every day from the fountain.

My question specifically relates to preventing urinary blockages in male cats. Fluffy has never had a blockage but I never want him to experience that. Prevention being better than cure is my thinking. My previous cat was female so this is not an area I have any experience in.

When Fluffy was a kitten I read articles about urinary crystals in males and it really scared me. I did read some advice that recommended not to put them on a urinary tract diet in the first 3 years because they're still growing. I don't know if that's good advice - but I followed it...

So now that he's fully grown - is it time to change his food (particularly his dry food) to a urinary tract formula? Any comments on this and any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Talk to your vet. I would have him on an adult food, but not a prescription diet. On indoor or not, it depends on his weight.

Thanks for posting this question Pam, I'm also wondering what food to give Wesley. Because Fosco had a couple of UTI's I had to put him onto c/d and so to make it easy I fed it to Cody and Katy as well because it was terrifying going through the ordeal with Fosco and I just didn't want the same thing to happen to Cody. When I spoke to the vet at that time he it was fine to feed the c/d as the cats were older than Wesley is now.  However, this is making me wonder what I should feed him now, I definitely want to phone the vet for some advice too.

Most prescription diets can be free fed to all the (adult?) cats, although they do tend to be much more expensive. We had one with kidney issues, but free fed her food to all.

Yep - this is definitely a 'talk to the vet' issue... xo

After having Tigga who constantly had uti's and then finally loosing him I spoke to the vet when I got the boys. He recomended when got to adult hood to give them any foods that have the symbol s/o on them in royal canin range as
S/O index
creates a urinary environment unfavourable for the development of struvite and calcium oxalate uroliths.
Zimba has sterilised indoor wet which helps with urinary also s/o wet and shadow has the sensitive and gastrointestinal wet which has the s/o index due to his funny tummy plus they both have the dental dry which has s/o index due to their teeth problems and oral which is also helps with urinary health so plenty of variety.

Thanks so much for the information about your personal experience Helen - much appreciated... xo Smile

The lock-down here has affected deliveries and I've been waiting for an RC cat food delivery for over 3 weeks... Sad

I bought some supermarket grain-free dry food for Fluffy and mixed it in with his RC at 10% supermarket food and 90% RC. But as soon as I introduced the new food Fluffy suddenly began drinking more water. Suspect it may have been the salt content in the supermarket food??? Have since picked each piece of supermarket food out of his bowl and we are back to 100% RC (and back to normal water intake)...

Praying that the RC delivery comes soon...

I hope that you get your delivery soon but I too am in the position of waiting on Royal Canin to bring my cat's food back in stock and it's been weeks. I'm having to try another novelty protein food here and so far so good. My vet says that this has been something of a pattern for Royal Canin of late.

Oh no!!! Sad

Fluffy's been on RC his whole life and my late dog was on it for the last decade of his life...

I will just have to stock up wherever I can get it from...

Gosh I hope you get your order soon.
Here the Royal Canin  is constantly in and out of stock too  and alot of places don't stock everything either which makes it hard when want to get everything  so as soon as in stock I order it on line as can't get everything in store I would get from our vet but they only have 3 out of the 6 I buy.  Just placed an order this week from our usual on line store had to resort to getting it from them unfortunately as they were the only ones that had everything in stock.  Luckily don't need it yet so wiped the box down it all came in and will leave sitting in garage for a couple weeks then will wipe everything down that's inside and leave there for another week or so..  Shouldn't need to mid October so plenty of time.
