Unusual visitor - Codysmom - 08-08-2022

We've had a rather interesting visitor these past couple of weeks; we were surprised to see this chap in our garden. Although, Vervet monkeys are endemic in various parts of South Africa they're not, to my knowledge, widespread in our area.

However, for the last few weeks this chap has been in the area and after about a week decided our garden was a safe spot - with food (which we actually put out for the birds).

I did feel sorry for this poor, little chap, he was obviously very hungry and loved the fruit and peanut butter we give the birds.  Big Grin

At first he would charge off whenever he saw one of us, but after a week or so I think he realised we weren't a threat and would just watch us while he enjoyed his breakfast.

He was all on his own and having to obviously fend for himself, which must have been difficult for him with all the large dogs around the neighbourhood. I also noticed he had an injured front paw, so, I decided to contact our local SPCA who came and set a trap and we managed to capture him last Thursday. The wildlife vet would to give him a thorough checkup and then he would be taken to another province into a wildlife sanctuary. I'm sure he'll be happy to be able to join a troop, and of course, have enough food. Although, I do miss seeing him around the garden. The cats were startled at this strange 'creature' they'd never seen before. It was comical watching their reactions. Big Grin

OMG, he is precious. And I thought my squirrels were cute, but they can't compare. Thank you for taking such good care of him and for such wonderful photos.

Such amazing photos - thanks so much for sharing them!!! Glad he's been rescued and will be able to socialise with other monkeys...

Wow what an amazing experience having such an adorable creature visit your garden. Glad managed to be caught so he get the treatment he needs and be released to his own kind. He knew where to come for rescuing.

He's very cute! I became rather fond of him Gina; we feed the fruit birds just outside my bedroom window and for about the two weeks or so that he was around he started to relax a bit when he saw us and wasn't so nervous which helped me to get these closeup shots of him from my window. Smile

Yes, so am I Pam. The poor boy must have been very lonely and having to scavenge for food. In the suburbs there's very little of their natural food to be found.

It was an amazing experience, and although I miss seeing him about I'm glad he could go to be among his own kind, he'll be so much happier.
