  My older cat, Lore 12 years old, has been gaining weight over the past couple years. I have intentionally been feeding him slightly less and encouraging him to play more. Both of which take some doing especially since he isn't huge on playing a lot anymore at his age. Recently he gained a significant amount more weight while I was on vacation. I came back to a very chubby boy. I also recently got a new kitten so there is a stressor for him going on as well. Maybe eventually having the kitten around will encourage him to play with her, but so far he doesn't want much to do with her.
  
  I'm wondering if anyone has some tips on how to help him lose weight that I haven't already tried. I want my buddy to be with me for a long time and I know some extra weight can contribute to health issues.

  I saw a vet on TV place the cats food bowl on top of a tall cat tower. The cat had to climb the tower if she wanted to eat. But I don't know if Lore has any pain or arthritis issues that would make climbing the cat tower hard?

  We do suspect he's developing some arthritis but it does not prevent him from climbing the cat tree so that's a good idea.

  Usually the best first try is a weight loss food. However, you have the complication of the youngster, who needs a differeent diet. If the adult likes a wight loss WET food, then cats tend to eat it faster. Therefore, one can privately feed the wet food several times a day and expect that will become a significant percentage of the diet.
  
  Also consider interactive toys, like da bird. It can entice quite a workout and the kitten may join in and help their bonding.
