Cats can lose all of their teeth and manage fine. Not to say it is not to be avoided, but just to set priorities.
If things like homemade chicken gets to a meaningful percentage of the diet, then consider a supplement to make sure there is enough of things like taurine. They are made mostly for raw diets, but a careful choice would make it work with cooked meals, particularly if you do not have to cook the supplement.
It may be that there are binding or other ingredients in kibble to which his system rejects. Consider that there may be prescription diets (more expensive though) that do not, since ingredient content is much more carefully controlled.
Glad his behavior has improved. That is always a good sign.
