I want to be very careful about the information I post here about vaccines because I don't want to disseminate any false information. Everyone should do their own scientific research and make their own minds up. I am most certainly not an expert!!!
I was watching abc news the other night and they were discussing how the various Covid vaccines are expected to work. I don't understand everything they were saying - but they were talking about whether the vaccines prevent transmission. Here is an extract from the article:
Do COVID-19 vaccines prevent transmission?
The goal of vaccination is, first and foremost, to stop people getting sick, says Nigel McMillan, director of infectious diseases and immunology at Menzies Health. Sometimes, vaccines are also able to stop us from getting infected in the first place — and therefore prevent us from passing the virus onto others. This is known as sterilising immunity.
"That's a very high bar for vaccines, and not all vaccines do that," Professor McMillan says.

So - from what I understand - the current vaccines may stop us getting very sick from Covid 19 - but they may not stop us acquiring the virus and transmitting the virus. This was new information for me that I immediately passed on to my mum. On the abc news tv program I watched a panel discuss a scenario where someone might acquire Covid-19. If they have been vaccinated they may be asymptomatic - or they may not get so sick that they need to be on a ventilator.
Here's another quote from the article:
It is highly unlikely any of our current crop of COVID-19 vaccines will provide sterilising immunity. While early trials showed the vaccines reduced the amount of virus in animals' lungs, none of the jabs completely eliminated it from their system, Professor Lewin says.
I'm very grateful to Smudge's Mom for this thread! I expect to be offered the AstraZeneca vaccine in the second round of vaccinations in Australia and I will post about it when I get it. Mum will be offered the Pfizer vaccine in the first round and I'll post about that too.
