The Omicron variant is here and transmission rates have gone up 70% overnight. The modelling suggests we may have 25000 new daily cases by the end of January. I fear Christmas may become a super-spreading event since this variant has the ability to 'sidestep' vaccines and our restrictions have been lowered recently. We're being told we need to learn to live with Covid...
Boosters have been brought forward to 5 months instead of 6 months after the initial double dose. I would love to get my booster now and I'm hoping they will choose to make boosters available even earlier than 5 months. I've gone back into full protection mode and avoiding close contact wherever I can.
I was shopping last week at my local pharmacy and a construction worker without a mask tried to get into the lift with me. I held up my walking stick to block him and said: Can you please put a mask on or wait for the next lift?
He made a face and grumbled at me but I was proud of myself for acting to ensure my own safety. He chose to take the stairs instead and I was very happy I didn't have to share a lift with him!!!
My mum's in a dementia facility now and we had promised to take her out on her birthday (Jan 17th). I hope we can still do that, but case numbers and restrictions may make that impossible...

Here they are saying that this is the variant of the unvaccinated. Hope things get under control soon.

I really hope you'll be able to take your mom out for her birthday. Covid has made it so difficult to enjoy those simple pleasures that make life special.
Omicron is running rampant over here as you can imagine. -

I hope you can get to take your mum out. So hard when can't see family members. Our family has been stuck in various states of lockdown in Auckland for 100 days straight with the last outbreak so we havn't seen some of them since last year and my sister for 5 months. As for my brother he is stuck in Aussie havn't seen him for well over a year. Some of the family is coming down tomorrow for christmas lunch all 4 are fully vaccinated thank goodness. I have friends that have turned almost nasty because I won't let them visit me as they are unvaccinated and refuse to have it telling me they are more likely to catch it off me because I'm vaccinated. Unfortunately it also means no more play dates for the boys with Noah. No-one is allowed in the village that is unvaccinated and now have to show their vaccination pass before being allowed to enter. Personally I think its fair enough we are all vunerable some even more than others we have 108 villas plus the hospital and 2 dementia units and rest home so need to keep us all safe. I applaud the village staff for doing everything they can to keep us safe. We had our boosters couple weeks ago so very glad about that but I'm still very scared about going out for appts ect as I am very succeptable. Not sure how my family will react to me having a mask on tomorrow but it its what it is and that's the advise my medical team have given me so I will follow it.. And yes the omricon is now here too.

It's hard not seeing family and sad when the issue of vaccination has friends turning nasty. So glad you've had your booster and you're protecting yourself with a mask!!!
It's the same at Mum's facility - I have to provide proof of vaccination - have my temperature taken - and I had to get a flu shot as well. I also have to wear full PPE when visiting including a gown.They're doing an amazing job taking care of their clients and I'm glad Mum is receiving such a high level of care. -

I had a flu shot and got my booster this week at the doctor's office. I still leave masks in the car to put on whenever i go onside anywhere. The doctor/dentist/etc. still require that you wear a mask when going there and the Rite Aid pharmacy as well. I never knew how much I'd like to spent the time at home and even do food shopping at whole foods thru amazon and they leave the bags at the front door. Chewy's delivers so the girls are covered. My vets office has everybody wait in the car with their pets until they are ready to put you in an exam room. Makes you wonder if this will ever be over. My brother and I did not do xmas/thanksgiving last year or this year. I guess I'll be spending Christmas with the girls again.

Despite the strictest of protocols and being double vaccinated two of Mum's carers have tested positive for Covid 19 and we're now awaiting the results of Mum's swabs. She was coughing when I called her today, but sounded very positive and cheerful. She's double vaccinated so hopefully she'll be OK, but waiting for the results is not the way I thought I would be spending New Years Day...
I'm feeling strong because I need to be there for her - and in some ways the dementia is a blessing because she told me she'd come down with a 'bug'... so we're not using the phrase Covid 19 or Omicron with her...
