I have been seeing a lot of ads for Pretty Litter. Has anyone tried it? The website says the litter changes color from the cats urine. It does not provide a diagnosis but helps monitor your cat for possible health issues. If the color indicates a possible issue they recommend monitoring it for 24-48 hours then calling your vet if the color is still abnormal. I love the concept of it and I am thinking about trying it when I bring my little guy home.
From their website color descriptions:
Red: Detection of blood, which may indicate Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disorder (FLUTD), bladder stones/crystals, kidney stones, bladder inflammation, certain types of kidney disease and clotting disorders. In rarer cases it can also mean bladder cancer, or an internal injury.
Blue or Dark Green: Alkalinity outside of the average range may be present if your cat has certain types of urinary tract infections. Highly alkaline urine can increase the risk of crystal/stone formation.
Orange: Acidity outside the average range,which may be a sign of metabolic acidosis or kidney tubular acidosis. Calcium oxalate crystals can be more likely to form in acidic urine. Acidic urine does not necessarily mean these crystals/stones are present, but it is the ideal environment for them to form.

Have not tried it, but a new kitten should stay on the same litter for some time until well adjusted and then consider a slow change to a new litter. Each litter change risks, although a small one, litterbox issues, which are about the last thing one wants. On this litter, would ask the vet if there is any real diagnostic benefit in it. -

It sounds intriguing. If it does well in the US we may get access to it here in Canada in the next decade or so.
It is best to make any changes to a kitten's routine after they are well settled in and adjusted and incrementally always. You should start by adding a bit of the new litter to the old litter, 10 percent or so with every change until he/she is completely switched over and revert to the old litter if the kitten has issues. -

I plan to discuss it with my vet and if she thinks it would be good to try I am going to order it. I will not start switching him over until he has been home a couple of months and has settled in. I will post on this thread after I order it. Of course my boy will not be coming home until next year so it will be a while? Hopefully someone else has tried it and can weigh in on it.
I have been searching for reviews for the litter. Not nearly as excited about it now. I just discovered it was available on Amazon at one time and the reviews are not good.

Slow transitions of food or litter are a good technique when you are committed to the change, for example when introducing a prescription diet. However, if you just want to give something a try and do not care much if it is rejected, then just offer the new in a new letterbox or dish and see how it is accepted. One will have choices rejected just based on newness, where the cat might grow to accept it in a slow transition, but ... . -

I've heard the odor problem is bad with crystal litter and it does seem a bit unsanitary to leave the urine in the box. I do think that it might be useful for diagnostic purposes if their claims are true.
It's been my experience that the lighter weight the litter is, the worse it tracks. I really liked Nature's Miracle for odor control but it was everywhere.
I notice more tracking with my two cats than with my prior short haired cats. I think it's the fluffy feet...
I currently use this litter from Walmart and it's pretty low tracking. I've tried many and really disliked the overpowering scents that many add. This has a very light odor that I don't smell on my cats like others:

The more I read about it the less I like it. I have read several reviews saying the smell is awful after about two weeks. I can’t get past the urine staying in the box. I would not want to use that if I was a cat so I will not make my boy do it. It seems disgusting and very unsanitary.
I messaged the company yesterday afternoon asking if one a month was realistic for a cat that requires a large litter box. They wrote me back:
“PrettyLitter was designed as one bag, per cat that typically lasts a month in an average or medium litter box to reach the recommended depth of 2 inches. You may need to adjust the number of bags based on the size of your litter box. Since your sweet kitty will b eon a larger side when it is an adult cat, the depth of litter should be 3 inches. You will also have a larger litter box so you may need 2-3 bag of litter. In case you decide to buy 3 bags, it will will have a free 4th bag.”
This would cost $69 a month. In my personal opinion that’s a lot of money to pay a month for my sweet boy to be standing in urine soaked litter each time he uses the bathroom. I will not be trying it. -

I used Nature's Miracle Intense Defense Unscented for a long time until I could no longer get it in 20 pound bags. I can't lift a 40 pound bag. I had been getting it at Chewy's so I tried their litter - Frisco. It is $7.50 or so for 20 pounds, does not track, no smell, clumps nicely and above all, is reasonable. I just got the light weight to try. It dawned on me that everybody was using it but me - LOL.
As far as the pretty litter, even if it was a nice litter, I don't see the need for it. The reviews for it were just awful. I think Jamie would empty the box over my head in the middle of the night some night. He doesn't seem to care what's in the box as long as I keep it scooped out.

Thank you, I will add that to my list of litters to look at. I was excited about Pretty Litter until I started researching it more. I will not be trying it.
