Fluff is not a lap cat except when he wants a massage. Then he stands on my lap (rather than sits) and purrs at me until I give him a full face and cheek massage, moving down his neck and massaging his spine with both hands. He particularly loves my nails...
However he does display what I believe to be a typical ragdoll trait - he is rarely more than 3 feet away from at any time. Even when he's in his outdoor enclosure - he's happiest if I'm sitting out there with him - or doing some gardening...
As I type this he is fast asleep on top of his pram 3 feet away from me... -

Very typical behavior. I don't think, in all his 16 years, that Smudge ever actually sat on my lap. But like you say of Fluff, he was never more that a few feet (more like inches) from me.
Pooka (RagaMuffin) is the same way. As I type, her chin is resting on the keyboard, making things difficult. Smudge also loved nail "scritchies" . I think it feels more like their own grooming when they use their claws. Also, in cold weather, long, open hand pets, can set up a lot of annoying static electricity.
Many of my Raggie friends say that their cats are not lap cats. I wonder if, because of all the long fur, sitting on us is just too warm? -

Well Tiki is definitely a lap cat but at 21 pounds he's more of a lay over peoples laps cat.

Only Blasie is what I consider a lap cat. Freya like to lay behind my knees the rest just like the foot rest up on the recliner. WELL they did until Skye came. It is a long work in progress, she still won't leave them alone if they are not up somewhere. -

Jaxon can be a lap cat at times, it just depends on his mood I guess. Some days he is all over me demanding attention but other days he just wants to be two or three feet away so he can supervise without missing anything lol. He is never more than a couple feet away. -

Zimba is a climb on lap for scratches and rubs but then lays down next to me with head on my arm.
Shadow is a chest cat the closer the better which sometimes makes it hard to breathe

The only time Katy or my late Fozzy ever sat on my lap is in the middle of winter (and that wasn't often), although they're both big for my lap. Cody's not a lap cat but if I have a blanket he'll immediately come and cuddle underneath it next to me. I'm in South Africa and our summers get really hot so everyone's looking for a cool place, so only when it's really cool will anyone come, that is with the exception of Mittens (my tuxedo rescue girl), she never was a lap cat before but in the last few years she's really become one. I'll have to see what happens this winter. -

I'm so excited about winter!!! Fluff only ever likes to snuggle in winter!!!
I used to cat-sit a tuxedo boy before I got Fluffy and he was the reason I decided to adopt Fluff...
He had the most beautiful personality...

I think you're spot on about the nail "scritchies" being like their own claws. Fluff did not like being patted as a kitten, but he loved cheek rubs and head bunting. I had a Siamese called Sabrina many decades ago and she was a sooky lap cat, but of course she was a short hair.
Fluff seems to prefer firm, stable surfaces. I had a beautiful pale blue plush cat bed for him that he absolutely refused to use. But he loves corrugated cardboard beds so he has three of those now. -

MUM_of_FLUFFY I made a big firm cushion and when Shadow wants up he pats my knee so I grab the cushion and he climbs on so bottom is on cushion rest draped over me then wriggles up so he's under my chin as thats where he slept as a kitten.
